Il Presepe Napoletano

Ogni cosa che nasce e vive a Napoli diventa unica nel suo genere e resta indelebile nella storia umana. Tutto ciò che nel mondo vive di normalità e canonicità a Napoli diventa cosa nuova, prendendo molto spesso il posto di quello che era prima per gli altri. Voce tipica della cultura artistica napoletana è il presepe. Nel Settecento la rappresentazione della nascita di Gesù Cristo assume i caratteri di una vera e propria rivoluzione, il figlio di Dio non nasce più in Palestina, si lasciano gli scenari tipici del medio-oriente per spostare il tutto a Napoli, tra i suoi vicoli ed i suoi paesaggi, dove i napoletani dell'epoca vengono rappresentati insieme con i personaggi evangelici. Il messaggio artistico è chiaro: Gesù Cristo nasce in ogni tempo e in ogni dove, s'incarna nella fragile e meravigliosa umanità, facendo del niente di ogni uomo la dimora dell'Amore. Questa manifestazione effimera, ciclica, a ricorso annuale, che si avvale, come costante fissa, di figurine di piccolo formato di regola riferite, per la parte modellata o intagliata, alle personalità più note della scultura del tempo, diventa ben presto emblema della feconda artisticità dei napoletani. L'arte del realizzare pastori e scenografie presepiali permane a Napoli oramai da tre secoli, il figuraio, apprende l'arte solo per tradizione familiare e ne detiene il segreto con grande gelosia. Ancora oggi nelle case napoletane il presepe è emblema di una cultura antichissima che deriva direttamente dalla storia di questo popolo: cultura che, come il presepe, ha viaggiato, si è fatta conoscere ed apprezzare in tutto il mondo.
